For many patients, the best way of replacing missing teeth is with one or more dental implants. They are a great alternative to sometimes uncomfortable dentures or bridgework.

A dental implant enables us to provide the most natural replacement for a missing tooth. A dental implant will feel secure and does not involve preparation of the adjacent teeth, which is necessary when a conventional bridge is used to replace the missing teeth.

When you lose a tooth, there is also a loss of bone which had previously held the tooth root in position. One of the further advantages of dental implants is that they will preserve your jawbone by making it functional again.

Key benefits of Dental implants

The loss of one or more teeth can have a terrible effect on your confidence as well as your ability to eat comfortably and speak normally.

A missing front tooth has a dramatic effect on the appearance whilst missing one or two of the back teeth can lead to functional issues and problems with chewing. Where missing teeth were traditionally replaced using partial dentures or bridgework, both these methods generally have a negative effect on the adjacent teeth and gums. One of the many advantages of a dental implant is that it does not rely on the adjacent teeth for support, it is an entirely stand-alone option.

Further benefits of one or more dental implants include how they are long-lasting, reliable and therefore a very cost-effective solution for missing teeth.

Dental Implant Treatment Options

A dental implant is a small, extremely bio-compatible titanium screw which imitates the root of a tooth when inserted into the human jawbone. Dentists have been using the current type of dental implants for 30 to 40 years with great success. Dental implants can be used to support individual teeth (crowns), a number of teeth in the form of a bridge or they can be used to help support and retain a removable bridge (a precision retained denture).

Single tooth implants

If you have a single missing tooth, a single implant is the best solution for you. Appearance at the front of the mouth is important for many of us and dental implants have become first choice for many patients missing a tooth from their smile!

A single titanium implant is placed into the bone and once healed, a custom made cosmetic crown is made to fit onto the implant and match nearby teeth to look natural.

The dental implant crown will function, look and feel just like your own tooth.

Multiple teeth implants

More than one missing tooth can lead to a large gap in your mouth resulting in difficulty eating, speaking and affects the appearance of your smile.

Multiple dental implants can be placed to restore the gap. This can be as a combination of single implants and cosmetic crowns or a cosmetic bridge connecting implants together. The number of dental implants required depends on a number of factors, we will discuss all options with you at your consultation.

All your teeth implants

The phrase ‘all your teeth’ implants is typically a choice between a single jaw, or both, entirely up to your needs, suitability and preference.

If you are missing all of your teeth and you are looking for an alternative solution to dentures, then dental implants may be the right choice for you.  Conventional dentures can be uncomfortable and make you feel self-conscious but with dental implants they look and feel like your own teeth.

Implants provide a rigid frame on which to create a brand-new set of teeth, whether this is a denture or a dental bridge. As implant restorations are far more stable than basic dentures, it means there is less chance of movement when eating or speaking.

Denture stabilisation implants

If you struggle wearing your dentures or they become loose and move about, causing difficulty in eating and speaking we can use dental implants to secure your denture into position.

Two to four implants are placed in the lower jaw and 4 implants in the upper jaw, the denture can then be secured into position when needed and removed to clean with ease.

Implant secured dentures are also more comfortable than traditional type dentures, allowing you to retain a more natural biting and chewing function.

Implants after an accident

When a tooth or a number of teeth have been lost during an accident it is not unusual for bone to also be missing. When this occurs it is not only necessary to replace the missing teeth, but it might also be necessary to replace missing jawbone in the form of a bone graft.

This type of treatment involves a great deal of planning and forethought to achieve a successful and long-lasting outcome. We will prepare a treatment plan and discuss your individual needs with you at your consultation.
