Cosmetic Dentistry at Shelley & Pope
Dental Practice & Referral Centre

Cosmetic, or ‘aesthetic dentistry', is used as a means of improving the appearance of your teeth and therefore your smile. Cosmetic dentistry treatments can include straightening, reshaping, lightening and repairing your teeth. With any of our cosmetic dentistry treatments our aim to produce a better, but natural-looking smile for our patients.

Smile Makeover

Typically consisting of a blend of different cosmetic dental treatments and other dental solutions, the goal of a Smile Makeover is to dramatically improve the appearance of your teeth.

Following an initial consultation we will assess your smile and create a bespoke Treatment Plan that's tailored to your unique needs. This might involve some of the following treatment solutions:

  • Teeth straightening (orthodontics)

  • Cosmetic dental veneers

  • Composite bonding & white fillings

  • Teeth whitening

  • Dental crowns & bridges

  • Dental implants

Dental Veneers

If your front teeth are stained, chipped, or malaligned, veneers will give you a good, life-like appearance with minimum tooth adjustment. A veneer is a porcelain facing on the front of your teeth usually your top teeth, it is just like a false finger nail made out of porcelain and used mainly for aesthetic reasons.

Veneers make teeth look natural and healthy, and because they are very thin and are held in place by a special strong bond (rather like super-glue) very little preparation of the tooth is needed. Porcelain veneers can improve the colour, shape and position of teeth.

A precise shade of porcelain can be chosen to give the right colour to improve a single discoloured or stained tooth or to lighten front teeth (usually the upper ones) generally.

Veneers can also be used to close small gaps, when orthodontics (braces) are not suitable. If one tooth is slightly out of position, a veneer can sometimes be fitted to bring it into line with the others.

Teeth Whitening

Our professional Whitening system is based around home bleaching to give you a natural looking whiter smile. Whitening systems can dramatically whiten even the darkest of teeth and could leave you up to 15 shades lighter. It works by increasing the tooth's permeability to oxygen which breaks down stain molecules.

With long lasting, brilliant results, our Whitening system is a great way to dramatically whiten your teeth, while keeping them looking natural.

Composite Bonding

Composite bonding is the use of composite material that is then bonded to reshape, rebuild, or fill damaged teeth. It is a very simple cosmetic procedure, but it also has a huge amount of potential for different kinds of repairs.

The treatment itself is very simple, and it can normally be done in just one simple appointment with your dentist. It requires your dentist to first match the colour of the composite resin with the rest of your teeth. This will ensure that the smile will be consistent and look as natural as possible. The resin will then be placed onto the area required and moulded into the correct shape. The finishing touches will consist of curing the composite resin and refining the tooth further.

Dental Bridges

A dental bridge is usually used where there are only a few teeth to replace, or when the missing teeth are only on one side of the mouth. Bridges are usually made of a precious metal base.

Replacing missing teeth will of course improve the appearance of your smile but if missing teeth are not replaced then greater strain is put on the teeth at either side of the gap.

A gap can also mean your ‘bite’ is affected, because the teeth next to the space can lean into the gap and alter the way the upper and lower teeth bite together. This can then lead to food getting packed into the gap, which causes both decay and gum disease.

Crowns

A dental crown can come in many shapes and sizes, but essentially, a crown is a tooth-shaped cap that is used to cover and protect a broken part of your tooth. Dental crowns are designed to mimic the natural appearance of your tooth, these can be made out of porcelain or precious metals. Your dentist will discuss what type of material is best for your situation.

The longevity of crowns can vary depending on how they are looked after, but some patients have had their crowns in excess of 20 years here at the practice.
